Planning Commission

The Alaiedon Township planning commission is made up of seven members appointed by the Township Board.

The basic function of the planning commission is to develop and adopt a plan for the township in the form of a Master Plan (approved in 2006) and a Zoning Ordinance. (# 103, adopted January 26, 2009)

The planning commission is also asked by the township board to research and develop recommendations for other ordinances. In addition, the commission is responsible for reviewing plats or subdivisions and special use permits for which they make recommendations to the township board for final action.

Zoning Ordinance

Alaiedon Township Ordinance #103 is enacted under Public Act 110 of 2006 . The ordinance regulates the use and development of land; provides for the establishment of districts within which specified land use and development may occur including restrictions and requirements for structures, buildings, yards and development densities; and establishes a permitting system to ensure reasonable review and authorization of land uses and development including the issuance of permits, appeals of decisions and penalties for violations.

Zoning Board of Appeals

The zoning board of appeals is established to review and consider variances on a case by case basis to the zoning ordinance or other ordinances. Members of the board of appeals usually meet on site, and their decisions are final.

Board of Review

The board of review meets on the Tuesday following the first Monday in March to review and examine the property assessment roll made by the assessor. The board must also meet at 9:00 a.m. on the second Monday and Tuesday in March for a least six hours each day. Under the Open Meetings Act, the board of review must hear assessment complaints from taxpayers, and the board shall, upon landowners showing sufficient cause, correct the assessment on any particular property to make the valuation relatively just and equal. The board may also meet on the Tuesday following the second Monday in December and on the Tuesday after the third Monday in July to review and correct clerical errors or mutual mistakes of fact on assessments.
